Cholesterol & Exercise
One of the sure ways of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with cholesterol is through a healthy exercise regime. Many studies have shown that regular exercise regularly (along with a healthy diet and lifestyle) reduces cholesterol levels and the associated complications like heart disease.
Exercise helps lower cholesterol levels in several ways:
- Increases HDL (good cholesterol) levels which directly reduces excess LDL (bad cholesterol) from the blood
- Helps in weight loss and control
- Tones body muscles and circulation - clearing clots in the blood vessels and strengthening the heart
Exercise does not necessary mean following a strict and tough regime. Simple everyday activities like gardening is good enough to contribute in reducing cholesterol levels. Also, consider making simple conscious changes in your daily routine - for example, take the stairs instead of taking the elevator or stand in your subway journey to work instead of sitting.
If however, you prefer a more disciplined exercise program, do keep in mind the following tips:
- Be properly attired for exercise
- Don’t push it
- Drink sufficient water
- Warm up before starting
- Cool down properly
