Cholesterol & Exercise

One of the sure ways of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with cholesterol is through a healthy exercise regime. Many studies have shown that regular exercise regularly (along with a healthy diet and lifestyle) reduces cholesterol levels and the associated complications like heart disease.

Exercise helps lower cholesterol levels in several ways:

  1. Increases HDL (good cholesterol) levels which directly reduces excess LDL (bad cholesterol) from the blood
  2. Helps in weight loss and control
  3. Tones body muscles and circulation - clearing clots in the blood vessels and strengthening the heart

Exercise does not necessary mean following a strict and tough regime. Simple everyday activities like gardening is good enough to contribute in reducing cholesterol levels. Also, consider making simple conscious changes in your daily routine - for example, take the stairs instead of taking the elevator or stand in your subway journey to work instead of sitting.

If however, you prefer a more disciplined exercise program, do keep in mind the following tips:

  1. Be properly attired for exercise
  2. Don’t push it
  3. Drink sufficient water
  4. Warm up before starting
  5. Cool down properly
